How to Find a Roof Leak
Your home can be affected even by the slightest roof leak. And if it goes unfixed for too long it can lead to the growth of mold, which is not only gross but potentially harmful to your health. That's why it should be your top priority to locate the source of your roof leak and get it repaired.
The first sign is the formation of mold
The sight and sound of dripping water are generally the first symptoms of a roof leak. There are other tell-tale signs that you are likely to discover, however, irrespective of whether it rains or not. These include:
- Musty smells in affected rooms
- Flecks of rain on your window
- Spots on your walls outside
- Patches are bulging on your inner walls
- Shingles that are incomplete or warped
Somewhere in your building, any of these signs can point to possible leakage. Unfortunately, you may not be able to tell the first place where the leak is. You have to do a little more work for that.
Check Your Attic
The next walk is to grab a flashlight and climb up into your attic to find your roof leak. To stop putting a hole through your roof, watch where you step. Water stains, mold or black marks should be searched along the rafters and roof sheathing.
In some cases, exposed nails can cause small water stains. When the moisture from the floors below enters the cold air in the attic, at night it condenses on the nail and then melts when it warms up during the day. You can repair this simply by using a pair of pliers to clip the nail under the eye.
Make it Rain
If with a quick inspection you can't find your roof leak, then it's time to do a rain dance. Enlist a friend to stay close to the location where you first found the leak inside the building. Then, go up on your roof with a garden hose and soak your roof one section at a time. Have your helper shout once they see a drip.
Slowly move from section to other sections, spending a few minutes in each section. This will help to narrow down the roof leak source. If your helper sees a leak, but is unable to find the exact place from which it originates, start tearing up shingles in the area suspected. In the form of water stains or even rotting wood, you can quickly find evidence.
